Our Story

“For with God nothing will be impossible.”
— Luke 1:37

This scripture has inspired Faith Home’s vision and growth since day one. It echoes in our morning devotions, where souls unite in prayer and Scripture. It drives our work therapy, where daily tasks remind us that dignity is found in service. It resonates in our Saturday worship and graduation services, as we celebrate each new chapter of restored life, free from the weight of addiction.

Founded in 1966 by Danny W. Barnes, Aline “Mama” Barnes, and Rex McCravy, we’re a Christ-centered, 12-Step recovery ministry that has helped over 45,000 men and women break free from alcoholism and drug addiction. Located on a 67-acre main campus in Greenwood, South Carolina, our no-cost, eight-week inpatient program has grown from a single residential home for 14 men to a nationally recognized recovery ministry serving 141 residents (now both men & women in separated housing) across 4 campus facilities: Greenwood Main, Spartanburg Men, Spartanburg Women, and Abbeville.

Faith Home has been more than a refuge from addiction; it’s been a home for the brokenhearted and weary.

Our Mission:

To guide men and women into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and, using Christ-centered spirituality and 12-Step recovery tools, return them to society as productive citizens—reclaimed and filled with hope and purpose.

Our Core Values:

Faith Home’s mission is fueled by six core values that shape how we live and serve every day:

1. Biblical Truth & 12-Step Recovery
We provide a solid foundation in the biblical teachings of Jesus Christ, integrated with the time-tested principles of 12-Step recovery.

2. Unconditional Acceptance
We respect and love all individuals, regardless of race, gender, beliefs, or background. Each person is worthy of dignity and respect.

3. Transformational Commitment
We are relentless in ensuring every resident has the opportunity to succeed in overcoming addiction. We believe addiction affects mind, body, and soul, requiring comprehensive care.

4. Spiritual Fruitfulness
We strive to reflect the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).

5. Stewardship & Financial Integrity
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Faith Home is devoted to responsible financial practices, ensuring that every dollar is used wisely in God’s ministry. Our operations are funded through private donations, church partners, corporate gifts, grants, and resale stores, allowing us to offer our program at no cost to participants.

6. Urgency & Responsibility
We feel a sense of urgency on all matters related to our residents, staff, and alumni. We take ownership of problems and respond promptly to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

A Legacy of Love

Continuing the Tradition—

In October 2022, James Gowan was elected Executive Director by unanimous board vote. A former resident himself (admitted in June 2012), James has served in nearly every role at Faith Home, working closely with Mama Barnes for several years. His dedication to keeping the program’s Christ-centered, 12-Step framework remains firm, and he is working to:

Expand Counseling Staff: Provide more case management and aftercare support.
Maintain a Balanced Approach: Uphold the proven blend of spiritual mentorship and 12-Step recovery principles that has sustained Faith Home for decades.

World-Famous Faith Home Choir—

The Faith Home Choir has traveled across the Southeast, sharing the Gospel and offering hope of freedom from alcohol and drug addiction. Their music testifies to the transformative power of Jesus Christ and the victory found through recovery.

As part of their community outreach, the choir performs weekly at adult care facilities, churches, and various events, spreading a message of hope and redemption. They also lead worship every Saturday evening at 7:15 pm in the Chapel on the main Greenwood campus and prepare special performances for Homecoming, Christmas, and Easter.

Looking Ahead—

Faith Home’s story is still unfolding. As we continue to grow, we remain steadfast in our mission and values, believing that with God, nothing is impossible. Here, burdens are lifted, identities are renewed, and life begins again. This is Faith Home—a place where the impossible becomes possible, where addiction is met with compassion, and where every new day holds the promise of redemption. Let our story become yours as we journey together toward a brighter, hope-filled tomorrow.
